Canna harbourIsle of Canna
Canna is in fact two islands, Canna and Sanday, linked by a small bridge. Between the two is a sheltered natural harbour, popular with yachts. The population is about 20.

The island is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is run as a farm. There has been a lot of effort in recent years to encourage the breeding of Corncrakes, which have been in severe decline in all but a few places in the Hebrides.

Early christian crossThe island has many fascinating aspects, from it's tremendous seabird colonies, to it's archaeological remains-including the intricately carved early christian cross and a Viking ship burial site. Anyone interested in staying on the island (Mary Doune is almost the only way to stay on the mainland and visit the island for a day), should telephone 01687 462465, as accommodation is limited.

Hyskeir

Ten miles to the south west of Canna is Hyskeir, a small island composed entirely of pitchstone columns. Up until 1998, it's impressive lighthouse (built by DA Stevenson in 1902) was manned, indeed it was one of the last in the country to go automatic. Following the keepers appearance on TV, they became well known for their one hole golf course. The island is also a popular nesting site for terns, eiders and has a large grey seal colony as well. In calm weather, it is also a good spot to see whales and basking sharks.
