Doune Bay, Knoydart

 

Doune is situated 4 miles North of the fishing village of Mallaig on the North West coast of Scotland. Although its location is remote, we have good road and rail connections to the rest of Scotland.

By car
If coming to Mallaig by car, then depending on when you travel, you should allow about 1 hour Fort William to Mallaig. 3 to 4 hours Glasgow to Fort William or 1½ to 2½ hours Inverness to Fort William. All of the road is now good double track.

By train
All trains to Fort William and Mallaig operate through Glasgow. You can check time tables on the Scotrail planner site.
Travelling from London, it is possible to catch the overnight sleeper, which comes right through to Fort William.
During the Summer months, a steam train runs excursions to Mallaig, along what is one of the most beautiful train routes in the UK.

By plane
Depending on where you are flying from, there are international airports at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. These airport sites have both flight and airline information.
It is also possible to hire a car from all these airports. Try Hertz Cars.

For something a bit different, it is possible to charter a helicopter from Glasgow or Inverness.

By bus
Citylink operate a service all over the country, including routes to Fort William.
From Fort William to Mallaig, there is a service run by Shiel Buses 01967 431272. They operate Monday to Saturday, leaving Fort William at 1.50pm. They depart Mallaig at 9.05am.

By boat
We collect our guests from Mallaig using Mary Doune, Gripper or Eda Frandsen, depending on which holiday you are coming on.
If you would like to travel to Knoydart independently, there is a ferry service to Inverie (approximately 6 miles away from Doune), operated by Bruce Watt Cruises. It runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, (plus Tuesdays and Thursdays midsummer) leaving Mallaig at 10.10am and 2.10pm each day. Bruce can be contacted on 01687 462320.
